The Three Main Types of Laser Level

Blog

Laser levels are the up-to-date version of spirit levels, using a laser beam to show a line or dot on the wall or floor where you need it. Which type you buy will depend on the job you are doing, but there are three main types.

Line lasers

This type of level will project a straight line on a horizontal or vertical axis. It can usually project both lines simultaneously, producing either a cross or two whole lines. The laser can be set on the floor or fixed to a wall, and will then project the lines onto the surface where it is needed. This is invaluable for indoor DIY work as it will give you a precise right angle. It is a good type to use for installing cabinets or tiling when you need to keep everything level. It is also used by plumbers and electricians to keep fixtures straight. The line can be projected for a considerable distance so it can be used in all types of environments. It can even be used outside in bright light if you use a special sensor to pick up the laser when you cannot see it yourself.

Plumb bob lasers

Plumb bob lasers are also known as dot lasers, and they are used in the same way as an old plumb bob — to ensure that a line is properly straight. They work by projecting dots of light onto a wall which will all be in a straight line. This can be horizontal, vertical or any desired angle in between. Although their main purpose is for installing plumbing pipes, they have many DIY uses as well. They can be used in similar ways to line lasers for installing shelves or cupboards, but are also useful in setting up guide rails or installing door frames.

Rotary lasers

Rotary lasers use a spinning diode to create a horizontal (or sometimes vertical) line in a circle for some distance around it. They are usually used outside to level road surfaces or lay foundations, but they can also be used indoors for flooring projects. They are much more expensive than other laser levels though, so they are more useful for professionals who need this kind of functionality.

The type of laser level you need will depend on the specific tasks you are trying to do. For further advice feel free to contact your supplier who will ensure you buy the right laser level for the job.
