Troubleshooting a short cycling water pump

Blog

There are many things that could be wrong if a water tank seems to be functioning improperly. Calling a professional is the easiest way to sort your tank out, but you should be able to troubleshoot and perform simpler repairs on your own as well. This can save you a lot of time and money, as you won't have to call for repairs that turn out to be unnecessary. One common type of problem for residential water tanks is that the tank pump is pumping too rapidly, causing water pump short cycles. If you suspect that your tank pump has this problem, there are a few things you can do.

Leaking tank

A short cycling water pump is the most common sign for loss of air charge in the water tank. Loss of air charge might be caused by a leak in the tank itself. To find out if your tank is leaking air, you need to inspect the tank exterior above the water line. You can notice where the water line is by looking at where condensation forms on the water tank, as it forms outside of the water body in the tank. Lather the tank up with soap and water, as this will make it easier to see if there is any air coming out of the tank. If you find a perforation, you can repair it temporarily with sheet metal, but it's also a sign that you need to replace your tank soon.

Leaking fixtures

If you can't find a hole in the tank itself, you should also inspect the plumbing fixtures that the tank provides with water. If the tank is overcharged with air, the fixtures might leak air as well as water if they're broken or not properly installed. If you have a bladder type of tank, you need to also inspect the membrane of the tank. If it has become too old and rigid, it might allow air to mix with the water in the tank and water will be lost when using faucets that are using water provided by the tank.

Waterlog

You should inspect the bladder in the tank even if you don't find any air leaks that can cause the short cycling of the pump. If the bladder is leaking, or if it has become stiff from dirt and debris, this might cause your tank to become waterlogged. This means the tank is completely filled with water and will decrease the power of the pump, causing it to short cycle. You can empty a bit of water out of the tank for a short term solution to prevent the pump from being worn out, but to fix the membrane and sort out the waterlog, you need the help of a plumbing professional.

If you run into these problems and cannot fix them yourself, contact a local plumping company, such as Slater H & Son Pty Ltd.
